Parent Café workshops

10: 30 - 11:15 am | Workshop 1 - Family Stories: How to develop the right narrative for your children with Lisa Schuman

LGBTQ parents may find it challenging to find the right narrative to talk to their children about their birth stories. Parents want to help their children feel good about themselves and their families and learn about their family in a way that is nurturing and developmentally appropriate.  In this workshop you will learn about:

  • Developmental milestones for non-genetically related children
  • How to help your child understand their birth story and family structure in a way that is affirming and nurturing
  • How to answer your children’s difficult questions
Presenter - LCSW is founding Director of The Center for Family Building and Director of Mental Health Services at Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut and Gay Parents to Be. She is also co-founder of Adoption Cooperative Consultants.

11:15 am - 12 pm | Workshop 1 - Interfaith Parenting with Rev.Burton Bagby-Grose and Jaime Brody

Raising children in an interfaith household brings with it unique blessings and challenges. Join Jamie Brody from Keshet and Reverend Burton Bagby-Grose of the United Church of Christ for a conversation on navigating faith-based questions from family members, religious leaders, and, most importantly, your children. We'll also be discussing common decision-points parents might encounter around faith as their children age. Appropriate for parents and parents-to-be at all stages of life and faith!
